Help on Moving from Wordpress.com to Wordpress.org

Options
Hi all,

I've had 40k views on my foodblog since February and although it may not sound like a lot to many, I would like to start getting paid for it if possible using adsense etc. To my knowledge, this means I would need to get my own webhosting, domain name & wordpress.com's plans are far too pricey.

Can anyone firstly recommend good cheap webhosting that's simple & easy to use? And recommend any guides online or tips?

I'm still trying to get my head round it all but love writing recipes & blogposts almost daily so fancied a bit of a reward from it if I can and hopefully have a little bit of extra income coming in.

Thanks in advance
Vikkie

I've found 5quidhosts pretty reasonable to use - you'd need to source a domain name elsewhere as they don't do registrations but you have a choice of hosting plans starting as I recall from free (albeit pretty limited) so you can move up as your needs dictate. Wordpress is supported and I've found their systems easy enough to use.

TSO Host is the one I use. They have packages starting from £1.25 per month. If you order a £4.99 per month plan then you get a free domain name registration for one year, although if you're not going to be using the full allowance of bandwidth and storage then you will find it more cost-effective to buy the domain name separately and opt for a cheaper and more basic hosting package.

Domain names aren't too expensive. A 2-year registration on a .co.uk or .uk was about £6.99 the last time I checked, and they had a promotion on for a time (which may still be active) where if you registered the .co.uk you would get the .uk for free (providing you didn't register both at the same time).

A .com domain name is 8.99 for the year, although it is extra for the WHOIS privacy.

Wordpress is easy to install through the control panel. Their customer service is among the best I've ever had to deal with as any support ticket requests are usually handled within an hour or two.

Web hosting is not expensive. Go for ones based on reputation/reliability/customer service, not price. You want a reliable provider that means less issues with page load times, downtime and also chose one that provides backups. Websites get hacked. If your provider can restore your site from a week or month ago, it can save you a lot of headaches.

The guys I use are Vidahost. Good customer service and they hold your hand for some tasks.

From what I remember from .com to .org is not too bad. I ended up following an online guide to help me through it.

Don't use hosting by Heart Internet. Had misfortune of dealing wth these guys because of a client. No phone support which is, rubbish.
