Anyone been to Thailand?

We've not been abroad for a good few years and were thinking of going to Thailand next summer.
I was thinking of a week in Bangok then maybe a beach week.
Any suggestions for where we should go - or is it not worth travelling that far afield?

Why go in the Summer? It's a winter destination. Go when it's cold here.0

I have been in the Summer and had a good time... be aware that our Summer is rainy season there, but that helps to reduce the prices and keep the crowds away.
However, if you are willing to spend that much on a holiday you could increase your budget a little and just about afford somewhere really wonderful, like Devon.0 -
Not a problem going in the Summer. But given the choice I would rather save my holidays for when it's cold here. Then one can really appreciate the warm weather if nothing else.
But if there is no choice...
To be honest, I have no idea of what there is to interest you in Bangkok. Used to be interesting a while back for backpackers and such, but now, I don't know.
For me it's really a winter destination.0 -
Forget Bangkok.
In fact a beach holiday in Thailand these days isn't that enjoyable.
Although thousands and thousands go to Thailand each year and say it's fabulous. But they say that about any place.
Can't splurge on a holiday and be seen to have not enjoyed it.
Just my 2 cents.
You might consider Penang. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
Penang is not much of a beach resorttravelover0

Well I never.
I must have dreamed swimming in the sea in front of the Paradise Beach Resort at Tanjung Bungah or the Golden Sands along Batu Feringghi. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
Hi, Welcome to MSE.
I've been in December/January which was great by the beach.
A week in Bangkok is too long, 3 nights is long enough.

Hi, Thailand is a fantastic holiday destination. We found that High season starts on Nov 1st, we went the week before this, and prices were very good.
I'd also suggest 3 days in Bangkok, rather than a week. We did it at the end of hr holiday so had a bit of time to get used to the culture first. Bangkok is a mad busy city, full of strange smells, strange sites, but is worth a visit.
We loved the Krabi area, we booked our first 3 nights in Ao nang, and just found where we wanted to stay after that. We asked to see the best room at a hotel first, before parting with any money. Worthwhile, a in one place they took us down a cockroach infested corridor first. didn't stay there!
We particularly loved Railey, which you get to by long tail boat from Ao Nang. It's a mix of backpackers, and really high priced resorts. But we loved the feel of it.
It's around 8 years since we were there though, so do some research first!
Internal flights are very cheap, so you could see a couple of different places.0 -

Unless they have concreted every beach, then from memory there are some good ones there.

Greetings from Bangkok! I just arrived this morning. I have 3 days here (3 is enough) then down to Krabi for a week.
The great thing about Thailand is that it can be anything you want it to be. You can do cheap or luxury, hedonistic or relaxed. The only problem is that it is a very additive country. Come once and you'll be coming back for years.
I wouldnt come in the summer though. Stick to Europe then and save Thailand for when it is cold and dark back home.0
