    Could he travel up Monday, get local/cheap lodgings Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu nights and return home on Friday evening?

    This would at least keep his job while he sorts out what to do in the longer term.

    Travel is done on an individual basis what is reasonable for some may not be for others.

    Check the contract for the term of location and travels.

    This could be a redundancy situation.

    the question is the new job a suitable alternative

    (same employer forget TUPE)
