Finding private landlords?

Having looked on the internet, these letting agents are the modern day highwaymen.
I live in a place that might be sold and i only 'might' be able to get a mortgage. If the place i live sells and i can't get a mortgage, i have to rent.
I have 15k in the bank, so hopefully i am not seen as a risk for a 6-month tenancy despite being self-employed with sporadic income. Although i will have had 14k go through my business account over the last 8 weeks.
But i am not rich and do not want to spend money applying for a place to rent, money to secure a place to rent as well as money for a months deposit, some sort of security deposit of 6 weeks worth of rent? And i'm sure there are other charges, like being charged for moving out!
Where is the best place to find private land lords and ladies, i would be looking for a nice, clean place to rent, flat or house, that costs hopefully no more than 600 a month. I, unfortunately, have a cat too, which is, it seems, like having ebola as far as renting is concerned.
I am ranting a little bit here aren't i

Lots of landlords prefer to avoid high-street letting agents as well.
Try online letting agents, which charge tenant no fees, or much lower fees - they really just act as an advertiser for the landlord. Once you have made personal contact with the landlord, you can discuss allowing a pet, maybe for an extra deposit amount if they have worries about damage, or an extra clean if they are worried about future tenants with allergies.
Also there's word of mouth, gumtree, etc.0 -
But be careful of con artists with online/newspaper ads etc. Make sure who you expect to own the property does etc. Unfortunately, con artists who don't actually own a property or can rent it love people who read Loot, Gumtree etc.0
