CCJ-legal aid fees

Ladies and gents after a bit of advice please.
I was involved in a criminal court case and applied for legal aid. I was accepted but asked to contribute 1200 a month which I simply couldn't afford so argued the case.
I didn't pay anything while above was on going and next thing I receive a CCJ. I therefore agree to pay a lower contribution straight away which I was trying to do from the start .
Anyway once the case was over my legal bills came to 2k (my contribution was 2.2k so I received a refund) whereas if I had contributed there original amount I would have paid 18k!!!!
I guess the advice I'm after is what are options if any do I have on the above?
Trying for a mortgage in coming months and this is going to flag unfortunately.
Cheers
