Account holder name 'wrong'

My late sister had a bank account and my mother is the beneficiary.

However, we have only just discovered that there was a spelling error in the account name. One letter of the christian name is wrong. It therefore doesn't agree with the death certificate.

How can we put this right given that the account holder is deceased?

I can't go into the branch as I live at the other end of the country from my mother, so any advice would be welcomed.

The executor of your sister's estate will probably need to write to the bank to indemnify them from any subsequent action. I would expect the bank to have a department to deal with deceased accounts, the executor should contact them in the first place. I had to do something similar for missing share certificates when my dad died.

can you not go into a branch where the account was held that is closer to where you live?
You wont need to go into 'the branch' where the account was opened. The account was opened with the bank and not the branch, you should be able to get advise from any of the branches, but I would assume that there is a team in the branch that are specialised for bereavement processes, and they will be able to help or let you know how you go about changing the name and continuing with the process.
