Can anyone recommend an XP friendly printer that only requires a black ink cartridge to print.
We're only a very occasional letter printing family and only require the use of black ink.
Cheers

XP is a sitting duck for malware, I'd suggest updating it to a supported and patched OS whether it Win 7+ or Linux.
Unpatched remote code execution flaws are stacking up by the day for XP.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
Get a cheap canon and set it to print Greyscale only
It comes with ink to get you going

Hi
Well
Brother are being economical with the truth?
Brother are being economical with the manufacture?
Anyway to me it seems economical and a good buy to me, as ink dries up quite quickly and replacement cartridges are costly.
As the OP wanted occasional printing I took the above into consideration, and it is a tad over 4p per A4 sheet.
I wouldn't expect a starter ink cartridge to do a thousand, probably about 200. So to get a Thousand pages my guess is a starter and 2 'full' replacements. Cost per sheet?? At least 8p, maybe as much as 12p is my guess.
So Brother using the term 'economical' seems fair to moi. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Yes but consider the toners for it can be found for about £15 to do 1000 pages and a comparable inkjet won't get anywhere near that.
here's some details about the running costs for that printer, the HL-1110 which looks a nice little printer actually:

This is based on genuine toners. You can get the cheaper compatibles or remans (and the remanufactured drums as well) which would reduce the running costs of the printer even further.
I personally have an inkjet which I hardly use now and the problem with inkjets is if you don't use them regularly enough the ink can dry up. You won't have that problem with the mono laser as they use powder instead so there's nothing to dry.0 -
Hi, I bought a used samsung ML 4500 black laser printer on ebay 4 years ago and it has been the best printer I have ever bought. Currently there are a couple for sale on ebay for less than £20. Even though they are a laser printer I buy the toner refil bottles for £8 on ebay. They are easy to fill, just remove the cap, top up and replace the cap. I have had over 3000 prints from one bottle. The earlier printers only have parallel port connections but later ones have usb connection. You can still download the drivers for windows xp from the samsung website.
Hope this helps0 -

Bought this printer for my DD a year ago to use in Uni and it's done the job. The quality of the print top quality but no issue with ink drying up and needing constant replacing. During the summer when she was home I used it and was impressed by the speed, quietness and how neat and compact it was.
She hasn't needed to replace the ink at all to date. I recommended it to a friend for her son to use at Uni and he too is impressed with it.
For a small home printer it does the job and at under £40 great value for money.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
