Bad Credit with Nationwide

My sister has recently just started work after being at Uni, while at Uni she had a nationwide account which had one direct debit being collected from it.
To cut a long story a this direct debit failed once even though there was enough money in there so letters where being sent back and forward between my sister and nationwide over about 9 months because they kept trying to take this failed DD charge and charging her again for un authorized overdraft which she was trying to appeal and these charges kept mounting up till they reached about £400 by which point she cleared the debt with her student loan over a year ago.
now she tried to get a mobile phone but got rejected so she got and online credit report which had 7 red circles with a 6 in them, 1 with a red 5, 1 with a red 4 and orange 3 and orange 2. Now this is totally messed her credit up and is now unable to get a proper current account. Is there anything that can be done and were Nationwide in the right because this seams totally un-called for on there part especially seeing as letters were being sent by both partied to sort it out.
