On BBC3 at 9.00p.m there is the following programme:
    Outrageous Wasters
    BBC Three
Green living expert Joanna Yarrow, anti-waste enforcer Dan Carraro and design consultant Andy Tugby are challenged to transform the wasteful household of the Buchanans into an environmentally friendly home. They begin by educating the family about the resources they are wasting by having 32 regular light bulbs in just one room of their house and spending £300 a week on supermarket produce

32 light bulbs in ONE room.... and £300.000 a week.....:confused:

I've just hunted out the recipe for Galette au Chou and fancy giving it a go as it looks lovely. Now for the silly question, do I cook the onions & bacon before adding the flour & milk or just leave them raw? Oh and what do you normally serve it with?

    Hi there

    Well mission accomplished....today i managed to :-
    make a loaf of bread
    make the sausages:T

    make a pork casserole

make pork stock - using bones from meat for sausages;)

make huge pan of chicken n sweetcorn soup - got carried away:rolleyes:

In the end the meat for sausages cost roughly £2.80..i made 16 fat uns and what was left has been split into 3 and frozen - will get turned into stuffing to go with the chicken :p ..so the sausages work out a bout 15p each ... and they are so filling as they are pure meat - with herbs n spices.. no cereal, stabilisers etc so 2 each is more than enough..

Dbelle...when you have a bad day shopping can be sooo tempting cant it..why dont men do that?.... well done on getting a slowcooker.. i made the pork casserole in our today...i havent used it for ages..i usually do it in the oven - but as its sat on the worktop it may as well earn its keep:D that will be a god send for you...coming home in winter knowing dinner is pretty much done:j

You mention crumble earlier....have you tried adding some porridge oats, a sprinkle of brown sugar and some coconut? mmmmm it makes such a nice change

    Hi Daisy....

Thanks.... have to say they are tasy, when i first got the machine the consistancy of the sausages felt a little odd as they dont have that smooth even texture that a lot of supermarket sausages have... the ones i do have a texture a bit similar to coarse pate - if that makes sense:D .. at the moment im using the synthetic casings.. they have a longer shelf life, and i thought they would be easier to work with whilst i got used to it :rotfl: .. im just going to look into the natural skins...:p .. looking in the carb book they are carb free, not sure about the casing though.. cant imagine them being a lot! i have a sausage recipe book from america,,,, now i like most game -but i draw the line at :-squirrel, moose and doves made into sausages

    Hi there Dbelle

Just thought id drop you a quick line and see how the budget is going?

Im off to a big naffi on monday...but im planning on keeping a tight hold on my purse;) ... im hoping on getting away with just buying a couple of bags of bread flour ..... i can't get a decent one in the german shops  ... hubby will run out of Nescafe soon.. but will be using up the percolator coffee before i get any more :rotfl: ... Nescafe is about £4.20 for a 200g jar here  .... so i will be getting plenty of that when i come back to the UK;)

I have worked out that i have enough chicken, pork, sausage etc to last through next week... so fingers crossed i can keep my self under control in the Naffi - cos then i wil come in under budget:T

Hope your still on target -or near too....:D

  • Wow great thread. So many good ideas.

I currently spend about £180-£200 a month on food. This is for 5 of us. Me, my bf, and 3 kids (5 nights a week) who eat adult size portions. I do all the usual, menu plan, price book, coupons, batch cook, however not as much as I'd like.

This thread has given me some extra ideas, I'd never even thought of buying frozen pepper slices! Off to do an inventory of the cupboards:D

    Hi there Move to Portugal...

I always thought frozen peppers would be slimey and had never seen frozen mushrooms until i got to Germany.... and after reading everyone raving about them i decided to give them a try - and its amazing how much they are going to save me!!!

I got sick of throwing packs of mushrooms away (they go funny so quickly dont they)..here i pay the equivelant of £1.40 for a 300g pot - frozen have worked out at less than that for a kilo bag:T .... and for pasta, pizzas etc they are great - i just put them in a colander to drain as they defrost before i use them....

I only decided to take up the challenge when i saw Dbelle talking about it and this month i think im gonna come in well under budget:T and we are eating just as well, if not better than before... its addictive and i for one have allready decided to do it next month....
