Disconnecting a router question.

Options
They say you shouldn't turn your router off which I don't. However when anyone moves house and they have to, what then?. Someone told me to simply plug the appropriate cables in and everything should be fine. Is the operative word here "should"?.

Switching a router off does no harm whatsoever, you may find that it improves your speed

If you move house the 'should all work' depends on what your isp has arranged to happen or not, you can't just take your router and plug it into any phone point and expect it to work
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand

I've seen it mentioned either here or the internet board. BSOD's reply is correct though. Strangely enough the folks who coded BT's line management routines did figure out that people might turn off their routers overnight. Repeatedly powering routers down is also sometimes mentioned as an issue. I really can't say on that other than to wonder why anybody would do that anyway.

What can be a problem is just yanking the cable out of the phone socket - it pays to power down the router first.

I do this when I want to change my IP address when doing matched betting.
Sometimes I do this to reset the router if I lose internet connection.

It's the repeated resetting that some frown upon. You shouldn't need to power cycle the router and drop the physical connection to change the IP anyway - somewhere in the GUI there should be an option to reset the connection and that will be the PPP session. Not that resetting it a few times is ever going to matter.

I believe that the BT DLM system is somewhat more lenient than it used to be, best advice a few years ago was not to turn the router off unless you had to as DLM didn't need much of an excuse to up the snrm and drop the speed... it's not as touchy these days....

All very interesting thanks. As for the "they", lord knows where I'd read that in the past, but I had.
