Cancel a gym membership

Signed a new contract for a DW gym membership on 30th Sept after a 2 min walk about to start 9th Oct. Went into the gym for the first time on the 11th, and it is not what we signed up for.
Plaster was coming off the wall, bits of wall were coming away, chairs ripped, machines broken etc. This would not be picked up on a 2 minute walk around when the gym is fairly busy.
How do I go about cancelling, I have tried to speak to the gym but have been passed pillar to post.

Did you sign in the Gym? If so you are bound by the terms and conditions meaning you have to give 30 days notice and pay up to 6 months.
Your walk around the gym only lasted two minutes but you had every opportunity to slow that walk down and inspect things but chose not to.
It can't also be that bad if the gym was fairly busy, can it - clearly enough of it was OK for it to be busy.0 -
I would check your contract with them, it should state how to cancel. Normally you need to let them know in writing and then you cancel your direct debit but check your contract first.0

When we went in on Sunday the place was fairly empty, and this is when the issues were picked up. I probably should have taken more time to inspect the gym but when your being followed round and having to ask people to excuse me to get past and that it becomes a bit of an issue, so yeah it was probably quite naive of me to sign up without having a proper look.
I just want someone at the gym to take my complaints on as I said I seem to be getting passed pillar to post or being promised call backs that do not happen.0 -
If you signed on the premises, you have no automatic right to cancel without penalty-there is no statutory cooling off period, only what cancellation terms your contract offers. It's up to you to inspect the services on offer before you sign the contract-not just a two minute glance. If you feel the facilities are below par in terms of maintenance then your best way forward is to make a formal complaint (that means in writing, not phone/text/email) to the manager to get the problems fixed.
Classic case of caveat emptor I'm afraid. No free lunch, and no free laptop
