Wow, what a load of information from you all; thank you all very much.

I've been looking more into hotels in sorrento. More homework to be done.

Please carry on giving any relevant information.

If you're going to an island in the bay, don't go to Capri - it's too commercialised and overpriced. Try Procida instead.

We stayed in Sorrento and used the local train to get there from Naples train station and then to visit Pompeii and go on an excursion up Mount Vesuvius. We got a ferry from Sorrento to visit Capri for the day. I believe there's a bus from Sorrento to go along the Amalfi Coast which is stunning, although we treated ourselves to a chauffeur who took us to Amalfi and Positano which are pretty. Sorrento is an excellent base for traveling around the region by public transport.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

If you're going south from Sorrento by bus in April, I would check the last return time, as it's likely to be earlier than hoped for.
