An elderly family friend had his meters changed a few years ago by British Gas to smart meters he then changed supplier just over a year ago, everything OK, 7 months ago he had a wood burner installed and now does not use gas central heating hardly at all, over the last 2 months his meter reading has been the same never moved he turned on the central heating for 1 evening and the meter has not changed still reading the same, he has asked what he should do and I am unsure hence the reason for this post.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

He should report it to his supplier and see what they want to do about it. They will probably estimate the usage over the period it has been inoperative, which will likely be based on last year's recorded usage. I knew someone that happened to with his electric meter and when he realised what the estimated usage was likely to be, he switched off his gas heating and used electric heaters to ensure he used at least what was going to be estimated, and then some...
Took months before they got round to replacing it.

  • Deep in the Terms and Conditions you can dig out the phrase somewhere that you are obliged to report any faults on the meters.Meter readers are unlikely to spot non moving gas meters. The smart gas meters I see are all little E6 digital meters . I ve found a few of them with blank screens but a none advancing digital smart meter is a new one on me.
Suppliers are unlikely to be suspicious as many people, like me, use virtually no gas at all so its now down to the occupier to pick up the phone and tell the supplier
