I'm still with them but largely ignore them. Doing the annual review seems to set off a whole load of calls selling insurance or trying to get you to switch this and that. I didn't bother with the review this year and in the end they just sent in last years. It's all a bit of a farce anyway. Have thought of going self managed but until my defaults fall off or I come into some money, nothing much is going to change for me. I rarely even think about it any more. Life is too short to worry about a few unsecured debts.

Thats how it became for me. It was only this year that they were keen on talking to me and whilst I have nothing to hide I dont feel comfortable with disclosing bank statements and wage slips which is why I decided to go it alone. But yes, the £200pm I was paying felt just like any other monthly commitment.

Beckstar, you can request information on your debts such as balances and statements directly from your creditors. You still have the credit agreement with them and it shouldn’t break the terms of your DMP.

If you self negotiate should be able to just send your creditors a budget with your pro rata payment offer and a covering letter. Some creditors may request more information such as wage slips or bank statements and it’s up to you how you feel about providing that information. It may make them easier to negotiate with if they can see evidence. As HaydenB says, a lot of creditors will just be happy with the budget.

There are sample letters to make offers and a budget template which works out pro rata payment offers on our website:

  • Thank you all - have spent the afternoon getting all the creditor info from my Payplanplus and now compared that with our Noddle reports and only about £300 difference, considering the sums that's pretty impressive.

I'll wait until I hear from Payplan confirming in writing they are definitely witholding my budget then I'll write to creditors using the ND sample James.

Thank you all, it's amazing when I first started on the DMP I was a quivering wreck and Payplan honestly saved me, but now I feel strong enough to consider going it alone, thanks in no small part to the support and community here

The credit reference agencies seem to lag by between 2 and 3.5 months, so those balances might tally even more closely than £300.
