IHT400 - HMRC timescales

Can anyone give an idea how long HMRC take? IHT 400 etc was sent on 13/8, and direct payment via IHT423 sent at same time. I've had nothing at all back from them.

Granted a complex re-calculation was required ('Benham calculation'), but it seems a long time.

Probate is sworn and Probate Office has sent a reminder to do IHT400 (!) as they are just waiting for HMRC to send them the 421.

I rang HMRC on 24/9 and they confirmed their system showed they had the forms, and the money, but could tell me no more than that.

Is this usual? Should I just sit and wait? Chase? And if so how (esp as 75 minutes listening to music on hold is a pain!)?

Anyone know of a relevant email address for them?

So no one got recent experience of HMRC timescales?

    sorry to bounce!
  • Sorry, I can't help with your question. I'm in exactly the same position although my forms etc, were sent off a month before yours, at the beginning of July. As you say, trying to get through to them on the phone is a nightmare, and if you do get through they are not very helpful, although they still want their pound of flesh and no doubt will charge interest because of late payment of the tax, all due to their incompetence.
  • I submitted IHT400, 423 and payment in July.

I received an IHT301 Calculation of Tax from HMRC in early August and got my Probate Grant in late August.

I have heard nothing from HMRC since early August, although the IHT301 states:
The amount of tax shown on this calculation is not necessarily the final amount. We will look at your IHT400 in more detail.

AIUI from the IHT Manual I should receive a closure letter at some point. No idea of the timescale but if I do not hear before the New Year I might submit an IHT30 Application for a Clearance Certificate.

As you have already sent off the form and payment there should be no penalties.

PA1 & IHT400 sent 14/7 (London). Uncomplicated estate - sent RICS surveyor report for house valuation.
    Grant 20/8
HMRC "calculation of IHT" with IHT301/2 and demand for another 100 quid or so received 26/8

My solicitor sent off for a Certificate of Compliance which basically confirms that you don't owe the tax anything. He said asking for this would speed things up. I received it within a couple of weeks. Might be worth a try?

    IHT 400 submitted 7/9/15

14/10/15 solicitor had the paperwork back & submitted ptobate application (I believe they chased & got the paperwork same day).

    Probate granted 2/11/15.
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

Received my HMRC IHT Clearance Certificate 19 Jan 16, so 6 months after initial submittal of IHT 400.

  • Thanks Tog for the information. Six months seems such an unreasonable length of time. I have been waiting over three months - I have just rung them but they weren't helpful about how long it would take which is why I have looked on forums. Anyone else got experience of how long it is currently taking?
  • We have been advised that they have a 7 months backlog!
