Sky box recordings

People often ask, on here, whether they can still watch recordings from their Sky box hard drive, when their subscription ends and are, correctly, told that they can't.
However, today, I learned that, if you downgrade your package, you can only access stored recordings from the new package level.

That's because programmes are stored in encrypted format. When you watch them they are decoded so if you no loner have access to that channel you will not be able to decode the recording.
People downgrading their package are always advised to watch any recordings before the package changes over as they will not be able to view them afterwards.
It's basically the same as having no subscription at all.0
