Renewal price increase
Currently I am on a 12 month contract with my current gas supplier which is coming to an end shortly. Now it seems the KW/H is more expensive by renewing the same contract than being a new customer. Is it possible to let the current contract run out and they will switch me to the variable plan and then I just select the plan afterwards as if I'm a new customer and get the cheaper rate.

Are there any other cheaper providers?0

@J45
You will need to tell people which energy company you are using and what your current tariff is before any meaningful advice can be offered. Also on what date does the current tariff run out and have the energy company written to you to inform you that it is ending?0 -
You have the option to look at what their latest offerings are and if you don't like them, go somewhere else.
You certainly don't have to be rolled over onto their standard variable rate or even to continue on your present tariff, however it's down to YOU to do something about itNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Interesting question.
Could you please advise:
1. Name of your current supplier & tariff & end date
2. Tariff you would like from that supplier (the one you say is only available to new customers)
3. Your supply region (or first part of your postcode)
4. Your anticipated annual consumption in kWh0 -
I do not think this is correct. Unlike insurance et al you are always free to choose a new tariff from the full range of tariffs of the supplier. (Only exceptions are if you are on an obscure specialist electricity set-up - some fancier flavours of E7 or E10.)Currently I am on a 12 month contract with my current gas supplier which is coming to an end shortly. Not all suppliers will allow you to change early without penalty and Ofgem insists that if you don't do anything you are moved only to the expensive standard tariff. But you are free yourself to ask to be renewed on any of their cheap tariffs when your current fix ends.0 -

1. I am with Zog Energy which is the Mercury 12 plan ending the 22nd October.
2. I want the same Mercury 12, which is available to me but has higher kWh than if I was switching over to them. (3.7 kWh as opposed to 2.6 kWh)
3. East England
4. Around 7000 kWh0 -
Are you sure you are not confusing tariff comparison rate with price per kWh?1. I am with Zog Energy which is the Mercury 12 plan ending the 22nd October.

In my region current Zog tariffs are closer to 2.6p per kWh, nowhere near 3.7p.
Zog are limited to four tariffs for any meter type - they can only offer you one of those which are available to everyone whether a new or old customer.
ETA: delta of 0.9p x 7,000 = £63 = standing charge. It does seem you are confusing your personal TCR with the price per kWh.
(I knew this would happen and it would confuse people. Genius wheeze, Ofgem.)
((Oops, difference is 1.1p not 0.9p. Never mind, close enough, I still stand by my guess!))0 -

Thanks for this.
As far as I am aware, Zog do not have any tariffs available to "brand new customers only"
You can see Zog's current tariff details on their website here:
http://www.zogenergy.com/our-tariffs
These appear to be the same prices they have offered you via email.
(Note the prices on their website exclude VAT, whilst the prices they have emailed you include VAT @5%)
Where have you seen any other Zog tariff that you believe is available to "brand new customers only" that is different (lower) to these prices?
If you elect to roll onto their variable plan called Juniper, which as you can see is very expensive by comparison, then you can transfer to Mercury 12 (or any other of their tariffs) at anytime thereafter ... but you will get the tariff prices as per their website on the day of application i.e. it may not be the current prices.0
