DBS check advice

I need a DBS check done for a new job, which is not a problem for me but.
The employer wants to charge me £57 for doing this, before I have signed any contract.
I have had a look at the Gov website and it shows two prices, one for an enhanced check and one for a simple one (I am having the basic one done), and they are both well below what the employer is asking.
I am starting to have second thoughts about the job, the main problem is because I just don't have £57 to throw away at the moment, particularly when they might just decide they don't want me for whatever reason.
I have suggested doing it myself, but they don't seem to happy, saying that it would take too long.
So, my question would be, has anyone else been put in this situation before?

  • This doesn't sound right IMHO, £57 sounds an awful lot.

My employer requested I completed a DBS in January. They sent me out the documents to complete and send directly to the DBS people and they covered the cost; I work in higher education learning services.

I have friends that have been asked to complete CRB's and DBS's and never had to cover costs themselves.

Does your potential employer want you to directly pay them £57?

I would be weary and google as much information about this organisation :)

Yes absolutely! don't do it! been put in the position of forking out for own CRB/DBS - my highest one was £79.00 :D

After I lost £300+ easily over a couple of years, I'd refuse to do such now.

Recently been thinking as some of the companies that used to get you to pay, now have job advertisements stating differently, grrrr, as mad as this sounds makes me wonder whether to get re-claiming! :)

I have thought about suggesting if you stay x amount of time that you have it repaid back? or go halves? if I ever am in this situation again, this is what I'd try. Often thought we need a Jobs Ombudsman as well...

A lot of care agencies expect people to fork out for their DBS check so they can pay them peanuts on a zero hours contract, but there are some decent ones out there so if it is a care agency have a look around for a different one x

Thanks for all the replies. I was looking forward to starting this job, but I have not seen a contract, and the company does expect me to pay them direct by the end of this week.
It is not a care organisation, and if I give too many details it will be obvious who I am talking about.
I have googled them, but could not come up with any information on them (and I am pretty good at looking for things).
I am worried that I hand over the money and then they simply make up an excuse that they don't need me.

Tell them you can't afford it and you refuse to pay. If they really want you they'll pay and if they aren't too bothered well....you'll find something else where they appreciate you.

If you're on benefits you could ask the jobcentre to pay it for you but they have very limited discretionary funds now so I doubt they'd do that instead they'd prefer to continue to pay your JSA.

You will not be sanctioned for refusing to pay.

Sounds like something rotten in the state of Denmark to me! I'm in the process of doing a DRB (incidentally you cannot as an individual or sole trader do a DRB on yourself) with a local school to do some voluntary work with an after school club (really looking forward to it!) and had offered to pay for it myself, however the school has said they will cover the cost.

Obviously before offering, I checked the cost which is £44 for DRB. I've already done Disclosure Scotland for other reasons to do with my paid work and as I recall that was about £27 at the time.

The government website is saying £44 for an enhanced and £26 for a standard.
I have tried phoning them, and left a message, but they haven't got back to me yet.
I may well email them, and take copies to show the Jokecentre.
  • A residential care home for elderly have applied a DBS check for me as I am looking for a care assistant job. Even though I was not sure about getting the job, the home manager has told me that I should pay her 65 for the DBS check, which I gave her in Cash. Three months after, I have not yet received any thing. I have requested several times to provide me a reference number, but according to her, she didnt receive it when she has submitted the form. Then I decided to chase it my self. I called the tracking system and provided my details, but they can't find me. According to them, the form hasn't been submitted. Now I am confuse and quite annoyed. the lady who got my money refused to provide me any details that can help me to find about the form. On the other hand she accuse me of being impatient and now she declared that she wont hire me.
When I asked her about reference number, she insists its something she doesnt have it as it is something you receive after the first stage.
Can any one provide me advice about this? I called the Dbs office three times and three different people have confirmed that I am not in their system. They search me using my fisrt name, last name, DOB, postcode and every other detail I could provide them

Forget the job, demand your money back, sounds like you've been done.
