Raw chicken

I wonder if you can help.
I have recently had an operation on my airways and can finally start to smell properly.
My question is should a raw chicken smell? It has been so long, probably 15 years where I haven't had a strong sense of smell
I am aware of the offensive, fill the room smell of an off chicken. However not sure about a general whiff when it comes out of its packet.
It says BBF tomorrow and when I opened it there was a distinct smell, however it is not filling the room with an odour.
I am now at a loss whether it is safe to cook it or not.
So do you normally get a bit of a whiff when you open the packet?
Many thanks

Sounds O.K to me but I don't buy chicken in packets obviously I assume that you've stored it correctly and purchased it from a reputable supplier.0

Yes, raw chicken does smell, and it gets worse half way through cooking. A fully roasted chicken smells lovely though.0

Live chickens have a distinctive smell, and raw chicken smells of that too. It's not the nauseous smell of meat that's going off, but yes, it does, and should, have a smell of its own.Angie - GC Aug25: £374.16/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

If your raw chicken is vacuum packed, yes the whiff hits you when you open it, and then decreases as you cook it. If in doubt, let it breathe for a while and it is nowhere near as bad. DGMember #8 of the SKI-ers Club

if it is off believe me you will know
Prepacked raw chicken smells like yeasty BO.. if the smell disappears after 10-15 minutes it is fine.. if it makes you physically sick.. it is not. #When off it usually has the rainbow green effect like oil on water too.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0
