DLA and cancer

Hi guys,

Does anyone have any experience of DLA and cancer. I have read about the general rules for DLA, but wanted to know if anyone had applied with a, what will hopefully be a fairly short term condition. It's for my Mum and she has just started 6 months of chemo after major surgery.

Thanks in anticipation...

I don't know about specific conditions as it's usually the care needs that arise from illness, rather than the illness itself, but I do know you need to have been experiencing the difficulties for the last 3 months and expect to be the same for the next 6 mths before you can apply.

Sorry to hear about your mum and hope her treatment goes well. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Just reading back your post again, she would probably qualify on the 6mths chemo but it might depend when she was diagnosed, if this was as long as 3 months ago, it would probably worth applying and see how you get on.

Some information that you may need to know in the future is that you can apply under special rules if the situation arises where the person is not expected to live longer than 6 months.

There is info about DLA on the Citizens Advice website - Adviceguide including the benefits helpline no. which means the DLA will start from the date you make contact (rather than if you download a form elsewhere and take a while to fill it in).

DLA is for people under 65, Attendance Allowance is for people aged 65 and over.
