Can't get Siemens Gigaset AL285 phone to register

We bought the phone without instructions but managed to find them easily online but I can't get the blasted thing to work. Following instructions I have managed to register the handset to the base but then can't figure out how to register the base. We do have two handsets and I have only tried with the main handset and base.
I've been fiddling with it for days so if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it please.
