I can't see how to turn this around.

So whilst I am happily but frustrated employed on £12,740 (was meant to be higher but on first day found the hours were not as expected) for a business that is slow to get off the ground and I've gleaned there is a heck of a lot more competition then I ever thought, can I say I am a Trainee for the wage?
It's not like I do a lot compared to what I use to and it's more like some social club with me picking up the hours others can't/don't/won't do. There is a possibility the business may wind up in January if it carries on like it has been and they don't fire me first! so I don't know whether to hang on in there for that and just tell myself well I've been happy.

Managed to make it to 1 interview where wage wasn't asked thankfully and I'd done the job role in another company so I kind of dug a hole with my answers because I don't want to remove anything from my CV - they have just told me I was unsuccessful as expected so I've asked them to keep me in mind if something goes wrong or they have vacancies again.

Had a go at trying to get additional work to go alongside main job but that doesn't pull off as rostered hours just makes it incompatible.

A friend in similar circumstance just goes on about working tax credit boasting the wage (which I've always been against) and lying about not working when it comes to other interviews - but this can't be the only way can it?

I don't know how far you can reasonably say to an employer my hours were changed without my consent, leading to financial worries without sounding negative etc.

A competitor has jobs but I can't see that 6 weeks is all the experience needed, equally I can't see a career being forged off the back of a business that didn't survive or wasn't productive? and just grown to wonder if I am not making myself more vulnerable in the long term.
I tried to do some reading about start up's that the first line of staff aren't rewarded by salary but in other ways?

What is it that you want to turn round? Do you want to remain in the job, do you want a higher salary?

Not sure where the trainee bit comes into it - you either are or you're not.

People will employ others for their skills not whether they worked for a company which survived or didn't survive unless you were the managing director of the said company perhaps.

Also not sure what you are asking? What salary you are on currently doesn't impact your employment chances either.
    ally.
  • Thanks, my day got worse it has been worked out I'm on £12,500 and so as I can't see it working, (you know why the debt free wannabe section on here probably exists!) I think I'll need to apply for working tax credits.

I'm growing annoyed over what now turns out at the total loss of 7½ hours so far but I am also aware there is nothing that can be done.

I've seen job adverts to be classed as Trainee's at 12k - simply why I asked.

£12k will be minimum wage roughly for a 30 odd hour week give or take. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a trainee wage, just the going rate in many jobs sadly

Just guessing here - please let me know if any of these statements are inaccurate:

Your hours and/or job role have been reduced without your consent - possibly due to the business not doing well.

You are trying to find an alternative job/with more hours as you need more money.

You cannot pick up any work in your current company as the shifts clash, and they may be closing in the new year anyway.

    You are interviewing with competitor(s?).

At interview, you find it hard to explain to their (or your?) satisfaction why you are not currently working full time and think this is hindering you securing a new role.

You are considering saying you are a trainee to allow you to mislead the interviewer into thinking you are working full time on a reduced salary.

You previously did a similar role (more advanced?), and think the interviewer may be suspicious as to why you are in a training post given this previous experience, but you do not want to leave this job off/create a gap on your cv.

    How'd I do?
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

  • Yes but I must say I've now been for 2 job interviews though where salary hasn't come up so my fears aren't as founded or rigid as I once thought, thanks.

I have decided if nothing comes of the latest interview, I'll concentrate on making home as I'm in between relocation and if the current place isn't happy with new address I'll need provide or need volunteers to perhaps go first that that is what I'll do. I'm confident I'll pick up work I just happen to be slightly better at it, unemployed unfortunately.

I'm sorry, but this makes no sense; it's incoherent.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

I've read many of your posts and they are really rambling.

I think that the poster you've responded to was just trying to help by giving you some feedback.

Seriously, you seem to write whatever comes into your head - which will make sense to you as you know the context etc - but to readers on this forum it's just a jumble of words.

I'm not saying this to hurt your feelings. It's just that you'd get better responses if people understood your posts and knew what you needed in return.

Congratulations on having had two interviews - it remains a very tough market out there.

In my experience, if you are asked about working part time, the best response would be to simply state something like - The reason you are looking for a new opportunity is because your current employer is having difficulties and has been forced to reduce the hours of several members of staff.

This is a logical and sensible reason that a new employer would both understand and appreciate. As you're saying you're interviewing with 'the competition', I think it's likely that they would know of your current employers position - don't lie or exaggerate.

I don't know your specific situation, but don't be tempted to mention that your hours were reduced without your consent, don't lay blame, don't mention any struggles with co-workers/management/if you feel unappreciated. That all complicates things for a recruiter and may make them label you as 'high maintenance'.

You're right - you will pick up work.

Plus, you say you're in the process of moving house - that's crazy stressful.

Personally, I wouldn't volunteer to go. You say you're only on about £1000 month (£12,500pa), but JSA is a lot less than that, and it's always easier to find work when you're in work.

I don't think employers mind if you're working part time - as long as you can give a simple explanation. It's much harder to explain why you're unemployed.

Picking up work is easy enough, but it could also happen that you don't get offered a new 'forever' job interview for two or three months.

Bits of work in the meantime, or no work at all for three months, isn't going to look as good to that recruiter as sticking with a company you've been with for a couple of years.

Whatever you decide - good luck.
