Car Insurance Excess and Quotes

Hi Guys -

My car insurance renewal quote has arrived - which is prompting me to do the usual thing I do every year and go onto the Confused.com website and attempt to find the cheapest provider with the best cover.

My vehicle is worth around £3000 its nothing too special.

I was just wanting to know what do other people put down for their Insurance excess, as this will no doubt effect the Insurance Premium Price??

I have checked my current Policy and it would seem i currently have a Voluntary Excess of £200 alongwith a compulsory excess of £95, so £295 excess in total....... is this a reasonable amount of excess to pay on a vehicle worth £3,000?

Also any other tips please on how to get the premium prices down, whilst at the same time getting a good level of cover?
I noticed on my last years policy i stated i do 12,000 miles a year but upon checking my MOT i actually did 9,000 so once again im hopeful this will reduce the policy amount.

Thanks,

Ask the website. All the comparison engines allow you to vary the excess and see what effect that has on the premium.

Remember, if you are held liable for a claim, you'll either be paying the excess towards your car's repairs, or having it deducted from any write-off payout.

Top tip? Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth on the proposal. Don't try and second-guess what a question might mean to answer it in a "better" way.

Realistically, how much would you pay out of your pocket to repair your car in the event of an accident before you claimed on the insurance? Excess is only paid on damage to YOUR car, in the event of someone hitting you, you'd get your excess back from their insurance. If you hit someone else you don't pay your excess unless your car needs repairing. So lets say you hit someone, your car has a scratch, £250 to knock the dents out and respray, would you claim for that or pay it yourself? Answer that question and that gives your your excess. Then play around on the comparison sites and see which gets you the best deal as sometime being willing to pay a high excess will negatively affect the price, sometimes positively.
