What are easy clean hinges, and how do you know if you have them?

On a typical modern timber or pvcu sash window the hinges will look very similar to any other hinge. The difference will be a small push button on the bottom and top hinge. Fully open the window, push/click the top and bottom hinges, and the window can be slid along the track to allow a hand and cloth to clean the outside face of the window.

The hinges need to be kept clean and lubricated, but this is no different to any other hinge. Some windows may be stiff, and I suspect there are countless people with such hinges who have never used them for their intended purpose.

There are countless other folks who could have specified them on their replacement windows but did not do so.

    Hope this helps

Just thought I'd give feedback on the experience.

They showed up when they were supposed to (give or take ten minutes or so).

Two guys in a liveried van, wearing company 'uniforms'. One up a ladder for the upstairs windows, the other on the ground floor. They did wipe around the frames, so that was good. They also cleaned the glass panel on the front door which I had forgotten to mention when asking for the quote.

It wasn't a great job, to be honest, but it served the purpose and I'm happy enough with it. If it was to be a regular contract, I'd want a bit more attention to detail and not so many smears.

Nice friendly guys too. They thought we'd already paid so they didn't even ring the doorbell. They left immediately after they'd done the job and I had to 'run' after them to pay for it. It was just easier that way as it was another box ticked and one fewer thing to deal with. We had a laugh about someone chasing them down the road trying to give them money.

    These are my hinges:

Can you see them there? Or do my windows not have them?

You do not have them. You could release the brass grub screw and that would do the trick. But over time the re-tightening may loosen matters and become a pain.
