Hi all

My cars developed an issue over the past few months which is gradually getting worse

It's a ch ch ch ch ch noise as in CHair. Sounds like its coming from the front end area but it speeds up and slows down in accordance with what the car is doing mph wise.

Ive had the front Brake Discs changed yesterday as I thought they were warped and so causing the noise but it's still the same now they've been changed.

I also had the Rear pads and disks were changed about 12 months.

Any ideas what it check next? It's a Vauxhall Astra MK5 1.7 sport hatch SRI with 110k on it.

Thanks
Matt

P.S

the link below is a recording i've made of the noise just for you to hear

Who did the brakes? Take it back and tell them it's making a noise.

It was doing the noise before the brake disks were changed. I had them done thinking the disks were warped. new disks fitted and its still making the same noise.

The reason I ask is because it doesn't sound like you changed them yourself so I assume a garage did. They will, possibly for free, take a look for you and tell you what is causing the noise. Whenever I've had that noise, it's been caused by the brakes.
  • Are you self diagnosing and the garage is doing your bidding, or have you asked the garage to find the source of the noise?

Any decent mechanic will or should jack up and spin the wheels independently to pin and track down the noise.

It was done by my brother who's a mechanic but didn't check for any other issues.

I've been told kwik-fit to a free brake check so i'm popping it to my local garage this evening. Just hoping for a bit of a heads up if possible on what it 'could' be.

At Kwik Fit it will be a number of things. like the suspension, wheels and possibly tyres. But they will do a special 20% discount to replace all your tyres too. :rotfl:

If your brother is a mechanic, why doesn't he look at it again?

Could be a bearing on its way out?
  • My money is on a bearing, or CV joint.

DO NOT go to Kwik Fit, you will learn nothing helpful.

But they will tell you that discs, pads, and tyres are all shot, and car is too dangerous to drive.

Please go and see a proper, independent mechanic.

    It could be:

    bearings
    leaking CV joint
    warped brake discs

A couple more things that could cause this noise.

The thin metal back plates behind the brake discs can get distorted causing them to rub on the disc or hub part way through rotation. They can normally be bent back out the way with a long screwdriver without needing to dismantle anything.

On some cars if the brake flexi pipe is not clipped in place properly it can rub on the inside edge of the wheel.
