Hope someone can help with this.

I have bipolar disorder and my attempts at going to university have been sabotaged each time by it (mania; much medical evidence can be supplied to back this up) - a total of four times. I've decided to give up 'brick' universities and instead do an Open University course which is far more flexible to my needs.

I've already been awarded Compelling Personal Reasons two times (which leaves me with two years funding left), is there any precedent for it being awarded three times in total? This would allow me to complete a course as i'd just be left without my 'gift year' funding, which hopefully I shouldn't need due to the aforementioned flexibility of distance learning. I've never got to the end of the first year of a course, indeed I didn't last more than three weeks in two of my attempts.

I've read in a thread here that someone called Taiko (who I assume works for SFE) said someone in a similar situation who used up multiple years of funding should be OK for further funding, subject to CPR. I'd just like some clarification- it's really worrying me.

    Thanks!

Have you contacted SFE about part time funding? It's different to full time funding, so you may well have enough part time funding to cover your whole course. I didn't have enough full time funding to cover a full time course, but I did for the part time funding, so I had to study with the OU.

I had lost 3 years full time funding, (2 years with the OU and 1 at a 'normal' uni). I got the 1 year back for CPR but still lost the 2 years so couldn't go full time, but I'll have enough to get me through the part time degree with the OU.
  • That's very encouraging, thank you SuperCat. :j I have recently found a few others that said they've managed to get part time funding after doing some full time, so here's hoping!

I think i'll be in the same situation as you (two years funding available) if SFE don't grant me another CPR year. And I doubt they will, though I guess it's possible.

I'm on Year 2 of part time funding after 3 previous years of f/t funding (compelling personal reasons were accepted- mental breakdown and domestic violence) not had an issue, my funding has all gone through fine :)
