£10 cheque and template letter returned

Hi,
On 17th April 2013(yes I know 2013) I sent a template letter requesting data from the RBS in Galashiels along with my account no. which I had closed earlier.
Got a reply from Customer contact centre in Southend -on -sea saying because my account was no longer open they were unable to complete security checks. They wanted me to sign and return letter with 3 months original bank statements or a utility bill showing my current address.
My utility bills are in my wife's name and I don't get paper statements from my current bank as I opted to go paperless.
What is the next step if any.I have not contacted the RBS since receiving that letter. Has this happened to anyone else?
