Note. I own the DVDs that I am planning to rip. No Piracy involved ;-) However, if I am breaching any forum-related law, please let me know.
What is the simplest free way to convert DVD to XVid? There are a few methods that are available online but they are either paid-for or require several steps which makes it tedious overall. Help appreciated

Google for DVD Decrypter and AutoGK.
DVD Decrypter will Rip the DVD to your hard drive, AutoGK will encode it.
Both a free and excellent bits of software. AutoGK provides a very nice and easy way of encoding something. It simplifies a lot of the complications."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
AutoGK does one VOB file at a time it seems. Did I miss anything? I've been trying AVI.net but then again it is a bit complicated. Links are a man's best friends.com0

I thought the guy that wrote DVD Decryptor was getting sued and it all had to be taken down from the net? That or it was the guy that wrote DVD shrink....but I thought they were the same person for some reason.0

You can queue using AutoGk, and if the Vobs are correctly named (ie end _1.vob, _2.vob, _3.vob etc...) it'll process them as one. DVD Decrypter should name the vobs for you."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
