Central Heating

Before we get into winter, I thought i'd exercise the entire central heating system in my new house (14 years old) as I've not really given it a proper go since moving in. I have only used it in 2 rooms, and had to bleed those radiators to get it to work, and when on there's quite a gurgling noise coming from various places.
Anyway, this morning, I went round and turned every radiator onto full and turned the system on. After a while some radiators got scorching hot (quite quickly, the system seems reasonably efficient), whilst some were predictably not that warm or even cold at the top - but no gurgling noise.
So, I went round and bled every radiator, which leads to the first point - the water is somewhat black! 2 radiators won't come on at all, but interestingly neither of them required bleeding - with water coming out as soon as I opened the bleed tap. Neither of the pipes feeding these 2 radiators were even slightly warm. The majority of the pipework is embedded so I can't really see where to look for the problem.
Finally, to return the system back to the couple of radiators that I use occasionally, I went round and turned all the others off (with the system still running), and when it was back to just the 2 radiators they both started gurgling again.
SUMMARY:
2 Radiators don't come on at all (both downstairs, utility and downstairs bog)
System gurgles when not all radiators are on
Water in the system black(ish)
I've been reading about "Power Flushing", and from what I can gather most plumbers will try and sell you this service even if you don't need it because it's profitable  So before I get a plumber in, any advice that might save me a few hundred on a power flush! :T

Hi,
Have you got TRV's on the radiators that don't work?
