MOT Failure to pass for less than a fiver!
I just had an MOT on my 4year old Vectra and it failed its MOT on emissions (lamda value only).
The garage very nicely explained the regular test and the extended test they had to do since it failed the first. All very helpful.
Then they proceeded to tell me that I needed a computer check (£50+VAT)
and then that might not be the end of it, depending on whether a repair was needed.
I told them that I would take care of it....I proceeded to my local motor stockists, purchased some £3.50 fuel system cleaner (eg Slick 50), popped it in the fuel tank, and drove up and down the motorway for about 20 mins.
Went back the next day for a re-test and when from an emissions fail to a pass. :j
Just goes to show you that garages are just in it for the money, and that the simplest fix is often the best.
I guess the tip is just before (ie the day before) your MOT pop some fuel cleaner in to lower your emissions value !!!

Very good advice, wdy.
For diesel car drivers who tend to drive carefully (read slowly) it's VERY important to give the car a good blast - meaning high revs - before the test. Otherwise, when the tester does the high rev smoke test, all the accumulated soot in the exhaust system will come out and it will fail. Better to get it all out of the way in advance!
Luckily I never drive my wife's diesel car slowly, so it always passes fine on emissions even at 110,000 miles!0
