I think it's inverse cube law - that makes things for the people working very close only worse. The point was that the statement "microwave has an RF leak and ... there is a health risk to the staff using it" was far too general.

Router's RF signal apparently doesn't present a risk to people near it despite following the same cube law and reaching devices many meters away.

Asked in bar and they said restaurant busy tonight means heavy use of...............

    Wifi

More than likely that is the real reason.

The router can't cope with heavy wifi traffic

Slight difference in power capabilities though.

Max router power (in UK) = 100mW
Microwave max power = 2-3kW industrial, 1kW domestic as a guide level only.Leakage due to a bad seal can be anything up to max

That is a hell of a difference, As a guide you would not be allowed within 15 metres of a microwave radio transmitter chucking out 500W. Safe distances drop dramatically when you get into the microwave region as opposed to AM/VHF due to the greater heating effect of the higher frequencies.

BTW the maximum allowable leakage from a microwave oven is 5mW/sq cm, a lot lower than a router is capable

And somewhere that doesn't use a lot of microwaves in the kitchen of a restaurant...
  • Sorry for jumping in here..
we have a wireless tv sender to watch Sky in the bedroom and whenever someone in the house uses our microwave there is terrible interference until it stops..
does this mean our mw is leaking and should be replaced asap??
  • I've had this as a 'fault' on microwaves. Streaming particularly seems to be an issue with services like Netflix pausing during microwave usage.

This is nothing to do with microwaves leaking so don't worry about that.

The solution is to change the band on your wireless router. Try different ones until it doesn't cause a problem! You'll find settings in your user guide for the router or download them from the manufacturer.

of course it's to do with leaking, but they all do it, the air is full of router/microwave/video sender/smartmeter radiation as can be seen clearly with a video receiver.
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand

Yes, microwaves do interfere with WiFi, they're at roughly the same frequency, 2.4GHz - 5GHz routers are less susceptable. No, it's not dangerous. If you think it is, eat cold food, turn WiFi off, and put that smartphone down. The levels of all these things are very low, and don't bother humans, but can still interfere with each other.
