Are BG correct to refuse yearly boiler cover to someone named as new customer on homecare policy, if partner has already had cover for one year in their name only and did not renew?

Thinking for example: about mobile phone shops etc if partner had introductory offer and did not renew after one year, would they say your partner has had a contract in their name, so sorry you cannot have similar one in your name! you have to pay full price?

Any advice as BG terms term's and conditions as they seem to be wrong? bad practice? and not actually promoting good customer renewals etc??

All good deals are for new customers as long as you do not share the same surname as existing customers

Or is it me and this is usual practice???

It's got nothing to do with surnames. It is, presumably, the same boiler, and BG's controls have uncovered your elaborate ruse.

Not my elaborate ruse, but got me thinking about comments from an earlier thread on homecare renewal and what others thought on their policy conditions

I am currently with homeserve no problems with them but renewal is in December and I suspect payments will go up again. So wondered if BG were any better, but their conditions seem unfair to me?

  • Cancel them altogether. You don't need them! The 3 star cover is a rip off anyway. They NEVER come out the same day, (even though their advert claims they do,) and 4 times out of 5, the thing that you need repairing is not covered in the contract. And also if you have a boiler that is more than 8-10 years old, they almost always claim you need a new boiler because this one has 'obsolete parts.'

And don't even get me started on the British Gas System Flush scam!

Shop around, there are other companies who do 3 star contracts; there is even a local one in my town.

Personally, any of these insurance schemes aren't worth it, unless I simply can't afford the protection that is being provided. Think about it, they are making huge profits. If you can afford to replace/repair the boiler, there really is no need to insure it. I do, however, insure the structure of my house, as I really couldn't afford to replace it if something disastrous happened.

As for BGs terms and conditions, I still don't understand. They have introductory offers, for households that are new to them. If you wish to take advantage twice by putting it in different names, that is contrary to the spirit, and incidentally the letter, of their offer.

I have called by out several times and they have come same day. Last time they put a new pump in and the system has been great since.

We have had BG Homeware 400 for about 5 years now. Personally very happy with them. Every year they try to increase the charges but every time I challenge it.

However with the last inspection they installed HIVE and two replacement radiators with thermostats under the 400 cover. However Hive was extra and cost £159.
