Some Help Please

Options
Morning Everyone

I work in an office at the moment (which is actually a lovely detached house in a lovely area). However, he wants to rent the house out, which means I have to move out and he's asked me if I'd work from home, which I've no problem with.

My questions is this - how do I set up my laptop at home to receive the emails etc that I receive on the PC at work?

The emails at work are on NTL and my home laptop is with Plusnet?

Is there a way of setting up my laptop at home so that I can receive work emails there?

Thanks

Sally

  • u can receive them at both. it should be as simply as setting up outlook. if not use

http://webmail.ntlworld.com/ to login if ur email is fdgfdgdfdf@ntlworld.com is it a ntlworld address?

but don't forget then they will only be on your laptop and not accessible from work...

you can set outlook to leave a copy on the server , means that you can access same emails at work

    it's under Accounts, Properties, Advanced

    Thanks for the replies

Yes Richy - the emails at work have .ntlword.com addresses.

That's why I was wondering if it was possible as I use Plusnet at home.

Assuming that you use Outlook/Outlook Express at work as your e-mail client, you need to go into Tools, Accounts, Properties, Servers and make a note of the POP3 and SMTP settings and also the account name/password.

Then on your home PC, create a new e-mail account and enter the POP3 settings as before. The SMTP setting may have to be the Plusnet SMTP server, as they will most likey block access for sending to the NTL server. Remember that if you leave a copy on the server as suggested above, eventually your inbox would become full.

Agreed but OE just picks up what's in the inbox so they would need to be Deleted. There is also a box "Remove from server after X days" which could be useful.

Anyway you can do what you want to do!

  • yeah sounds like u got it sorted. my settings for my blueyonder are simple as. so i assume ur pop3 settings will be

    pop3.ntlworld.com

    and

smtp.ntlworld.com ( if it doesnt work with smtp.ntlworld.com) have to contact your ISP and get there outgoing smtp address so u can send ur mail across.

but also aswel lots of ISP's dont support outlook. only outlook express so might be a bit of confuzzle if ur using outlook.

It is the same POP3/SMTP settings required, so this is not a problem.

    Hello

    Thanks for all the replies

I should have said I do use Outlook Express at work.

I'll try changing the settings on my laptop at home as I use Outlook Express on there too.

I wasn't sure that it would still work if I changed the pop and smtp settings to something@ntlworld.com - seeing as I use Plusnet at home - that was what was confusing me.

Not difficult to confuse me, I know! lol

Accessing a pop3 account is usually independant of the ISP. One thing to look into though is that if the NTL account is closed you may lose the NTL email addresses as well. Don't know what NTL do but some ISPs require you to dial up through them every so often or require you to pay for the priviledge of keeping the email address. Some may even close the email address altogether. You definitely need to look long term into getting an email address(es) independant of ISPs.
