Panasonic TV warranty?John Lewis

Can anybody help on this one. Bought a Panasonic TX28PL10 Tv fom John Lewis, in 2003. Paid £599 ! But it came with a 5 year guarantee. The TV has now develpoed a green tint- and is un watchable. Contact John Lewis, Liverpool (nearest sore-40 miles away). Who first said to me to contact a local engineer and they would refund me. I refused this, and they said because they no longer stock the TV- its the older tube type, they probably couldn't repair or it would cost too much to repair. They said they would offer me £100 off a new TV as this it what it costs on internet . eventually arranged for one of their TV repair companies to come out and have a look at it next week. Where do I sand on demanding a refund/repair/replacement. They suggested I shopuld find a replacement. Thanks.

Just insist that it is repaired under the terms of their warranty, if they cannot repair it they will have to replace it on a like for like basis.

If they cannot, that is their problem, not yours.

They will have to come up with a solution to your satisfaction.

I would deal directly with John Lewis, not one of their stores.

They do not have to replace it, though it would be good practice for them to do so.

The retailer can elect whether to replace, repair or refund an item. However if they decide to refund, they can make a reduction according to the age of the good, hence the offer of only £100.

  • are u sure the warranty is with john lewis?

also like dmg24 said above. they make reductions according to the age. compare it to a simlar TV they stock. and try and argue your point from there.

is it a like for like warranty do ukno?

John Lewis give their own 5 year warranty with all TV's.

No, John Lewis guarantees allow for depreciation.

...if they can't repair and can't supply the exact same model. It's quite open ended in that eventuality basically leaving it to an "agreement" between both parties.

Where do you get this idea from? That fault 99% of the time has got nothing to do with the tube and even if it had, you can still get spares. Usually a fault like that can be cured simply by tweaking the control for the green gun on the tube base/mainboard. They use a resistor system and the value changes with age so sometimes needs a tweak. Takes longer to remove the back than to fix the fault.

Sorry but you're not a TV engineer. You've paid insurance to get it fixed so if it's uneconomical, that's their problem.

Your whole post sounds to me like you're wanting a refund of the full price so you can go buy a new LCD TV.

To be fair to the OP, it was JL who advised he was best looking for a replacement. The whole point of his post was asking what all his options were. The only thing I can see wrong with the OP is purely that JL were within their right (according to their warranty) to ask for the OP to repair the TV first and get a reimbursement off JL after.

    I have found John Lewis to be the very best retailer anywhere, an example;

I ordered a Thomson PVR, it arrived last Friday, I opened the box to find it damaged beyond repair ( Thanks CityLink ).

I rang them on Monday, complaining about the poor service from CityLink, they sent out a replacement which arrived all OK today, via HomeDeliveryNetwork, the damaged one was collected by CityLink an hour later.

I am confident that John Lewis will bend over backwards to come to a satisfactory conclusion with the OP.

Not my personal experience but everyone has their own. In our case it was simply to get them to agree to a price match. They refused using all sorts of excuses that were both not true and didn't make sense. Customer service wasn't helpful and told me it made no difference what I said I should put it in writing because they considered the matter closed and refused to even listen to what I said. I pointed out that it wasn't very customer orientated to not allow me to even put my point across I was told in response I wasn't actually a customer since I was yet to buy the item and it would be picked up from a different department store anyway. When my mum (who was the one who was ordering the TV, I get dragged into these things to help for some reason) sent a letter and cc'd it to the managing director. Suddenly they changed their minds, admitted their mistake and dropped the price (but I bet they haven't dropped it nationwide like they promise to do in their "never knowingly undersold" policy).
