Connecting ipad to itunes without restoring/setting as new

I bought a new ipad and set it all up without Itunes but when I just tried to connect to it the only options were 1. set up as new or 2. restore from old backup.
Is there any way around this to be able to just connect my ipad to itunes without either of these steps being taken?
