  • I am most surprised that they phoned the OP and told him that this was the reason for the decline - most would have said you do not meet our criteria - end of.

They called me as I wanted to know the specific reason for the decline, before that I just got the decline letter, but I was shocked when I heard it was cause of past accounts as they was so long ago, I thought after so long you could open an account with them again, just like I have with capital one, obviously they haven't kept information on me for as long as barclaycard, by the way i don't mind them rejecting me because of this by no means am I annoyed cause of it, cause I did owe them money, was young and stupid then, but I just don't understand her appealing the decision, thankfully barclaycard and capital one was the only credit cards I had when I was your and stupid so looks like barclaycard I'll have to avoid until I sort it out, but she said I would have to wait 6 years even if I settled the debt, as its 6 years from settlement but they probably still wouldn't wanna know me. :D

The only real issue here is how long the companies are retaining the information about you. Its an area that is regulated by the information commissioner.

A company cant just choose to keep old records about you because they fancy it. It has to meet a number of criteria, such as to be relevant, up to date, accurate etc.

I ddint work in finance but in another field where we held highly personal information about individuals. VERY little was allowed to retained for longer than 7 years. The ICO will no doubt have issued guidelines about this specific area, a quick google should turn up the relevant guidance.

Nowadays most large companies are very switched on to this area and compliant, as huge penalties if you are not. In the first few years of the ICO it was all a bit shambolic.

Their particulars (name/address/DOB) and "Do Not Lend" are all they really need to keep.

As long as they can justify it they can keep the data for as long as they want.
