A BAD deal - TripAdvisor HolidayLettings REQUIRE Paypal payments.

:(I was booking a holiday a year in advance this week. I tried to pay by credit card
(the Tripadvisor Holidaylettings website had 'you can pay by credit card' plastered all over it). On the final payment screen, despite clicking the option to pay by credit card it kept taking me to a Paypal screen. I had a LONG Webchat with them saying I wanted to pay by card; they said I could only do that 1) over the phone, and 2) that they would use Paypal to process the payment. I asked if I would still have section 75 protection, they said they did not know and that I should ask Paypal!! I asked WHICH, who said No, I wouldn't because the chain of supply would be broken. I'm fizzing about this because TripAdvisor is such a big company now selling so many holiday lets; and they are forcing people to give up that protection despite the fact that 1) their website says "you can pay be credit card" on almost every page; and 2) most of these lets will be booked many months in advance, and Paypal's (limited) protection expires 180 days after the
transaction. Boo TripAdvisor, Booooooo!!!!:(

    Book elsewhere?
See if the property you want is listed on another site that does take a CC or if the owners will take a card payment direct.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
  • I see on your other post the problem is now solved

But you could still pay by credit or debit card direct via paypal. You just give them a non linked email address. That gets u your S75 protection.

How would that give you any S75 protection as there is still no direct link between the consumer, credit provider and supplier.
You authorise your card issuer to give money to Paypal and then Paypal gives money to the supplier, hence the direct chain has been broken.

They are just a "payment gateway", just as Worldpay, izettle,Nochex etc etc

Our business payment gateway is Stripe. Customers have full S75 protection and it hurts financially with fees if we have a charge back. We go out of our way to make sure we don't.

Re Paypal, the chain is only broken if you have a Paypal acc and they use funds within that, even 1p. THEY WILL DO THAT BY DEFAULT!!!. so it is important (imo) not to hold any money in the Paypal acc.
