    Hi redsquirrel

Love the name, btw - they're such beautiful, friendly little creatures. My "finance practice" is virtual trading on the cable rate (GP £ vs US$) via a spreadbetting account.

I've been studying charts for years, literally, and I have a really good grasp of it, but in the past I've been completely unable to trade regularly, and have been so frightened that when I *have* traded, I've been so nervous I haven't seen all the data I needed to see, or got rushed, or something, and lost money (not much - trades I've actually done have been at £1 per point, whereas the figures I quote when I say I made £150 or whatever have been at £10 per point). Still, the fear has made proper trading impossible.

My brother in law tried to help with NLP, and I went to see a useless NLP practitioner in Harley Street, none of which helped, as well as the years of study on what are called the technicals and the fundamentals of trading.

Now, I'm seeing a cognitive behavioural specialist every few weeks - who works on the classic behaviourist principle of getting information - is your fear logical or not, what's the truth behind your fear. To find that out, my homework is to work out exactly what I've won/lost, and how conservative/risky my exits are, on a real time basis (i.e. every morning between 7am and 9am). He's also trying to get me to meditate, to cope with the fear when I'm actually trading, and thats much, much harder for me.

I've produced consistent profits - only had one day where I made a loss (on paper still). I know very well that paper trading is very different from real trades, but at least these trading decisions are made in real time, with a real spreadbet account, its the most you can do to prepare, I think. That and the bleeping meditating, to keep me open to all signals from the market, which as I say is much harder for me.

Sorry for such a long post - I have kept it quiet, I don't want to advocate spread betting, but the long post is actually about how *difficult* I find it, not boasting about my great profits!

Wow Karma, that's really interesting, thanks for the explanation. It all sounds quite complicated and I'm not surprised that nerves get in the way. Hope it all goes well for you! x

    Today I:

Bought lunch in with me again (the last of the lasagne!)
Didn't post the book I sold on amazon at lunchtime as I know I would have bought chocolate too, so stayed in and will post after work.
will list 5 things on ebay, 4 items are unknown areas for me so it's a bit riskier than usual = fingers crossed!
Am going bowling tonight with friends (not very mse) but will be keeping an eye on what we spend and it'll help with the 'entertainment' budget I'm currently working on!
Have checked online banking and will update budgets etc when I get home

Oooh I forgot earlier - phoned AA "member retention" today and ended up getting my breakdown cover for £65 less than the price they quoted me  (and £12 less than if I was a new customer online - I hate it when they do that to existing customers!) They offered me the online price last night but when I said I wanted another £10 off as I would go through a cashback site they told me to phone member retentions and glad I did! - it means our 'annual spends' fund is already in credit as I'd budgeted the online price for this :money:

Also didn't end up going bowling - had an argument with OH about money on the way :o and came home. Had a store cupboard dinner then went to change the bed, only he fell asleep. So I've made a start on September budget and listed the final 3 things on ebay. Went up and got him to actually get in to bed and he fell back to sleep (think the tiredness made him get cross, he's finding me saying "no we can't have this we don't have enough money" thing hard - but then it's that or overdrafts/credit cards and we all know where that can lead! I feel calmer now but was so upset earlier - felt like all this was a waste of time
