My fix is ending, if I switch now will I be charged the early exit fee?
Energy suppliers are banned from charging exit fees when you have less than 49 days to go till the end of your tariff. These are rules set down by the energy regulator, Ofgem so suppliers do have to stick to them. So stay within these timeframes and you shouldn't be charged.Stompa0 -
As it takes a few weeks to change over to a new supplier Do I have to wait till my fixed energy tariff ends before giving notice of leaving to my present supplier?
Between 49 and 42 days before the end of your fixed term, you should receive notice by your preent supplier including details that your fixed term is coming to an end, what will happen if you do nothing, usually what better alternative the supplier can offer you, and your right to now switch supplier safe in the knowledge you will not incur any early termination fees.
(In the event the supplier fails to issue such notice in that timeframe, they are prohibited from subsequently applying early termination fees to your account too.)
i.e. you should receive such notice 6-7 weeks prior to the end. With switching of supplier typically taking just 3-5 weeks to occur, that gives you time to both consider your options and start the process.
Even if things do get delayed a little, don't worry if the actual switch then occurs a few days after the end of your fixed term, the supplier must hold the same prices for the few days until that switch actually takes place.
