Frustrating white box over photos in windows 8

Hey Guys
I am really hoping that somebody can help. I bought a new HP laptop on windows 8, and frequently when I open photos in photo gallery viewer, the photos have a white square over them, usually in the top lop left corner. This is definitely not part of the photo, and it is really getting on my nerves.
Has anybody else had this issue? And is there a (simple) fix?
