My mum and Dad want a new TV and have reasonable budget of £550.00
They want a Samsung (Preference) as they in there 70's things like 3D are not essential but they have a large living room so would like something between 48 - 55 inches.
Can anyone kindly recommend something

Well if they want a Samsung then tell them to get a Samsung.
How about £369 after 30 seconds of Google searching from Tesco not 3D and not Smart and 48"

Are they bothered by getting a smart tv? This is the 'smart' equivilent: http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue48j5500-led-hd-1080p-smart-tv-48-with-freeview-hd-and-built-in-wi-fi/p1939960
Don't forget JL give a 5 year guarantee. Bit of a warning; there's no scart socket support. Be careful when buying new that it'll support the 'old' DVD players0 -
Amazon has some great ones on offer within your budget and screen size you wanted:

Good spec was £318 quid last weekend at Argos, its now gone up to £369 but excellent value. You could have it reserved paid for today, collected and working in your mum and Dad's house in 20 minutes. An LED averages 4 years + that's about £1.70 a week, cheap for a good spec.
TV's and panel makers needed a new hardware invention to make money, enter the junk that was 3D. I have said from day one it was paul daniels snake~oil and would never catch on and it didn't. Only sky still pumps it out, few ever did, but even the BBC stopped after spending mi££ions. So enter 4K which already half the price it was only 7 months ago and we wonder why, the res is good .. .. the TV's they are on are crud. They do improve detail for sports but the sets they are platform[ed] on need a lot of work as does the almost zero amount of hours of UHD screened. So I don't see a 4k as viable until the end of the working life of the new TV above. Best of luck.
All panels and sets are much of a muchness at this price point / spec. Samsung half-life reliability is no better than Hitatchi or any other.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
