You only have a tiny amount invested though. If you are concerned about the asset makeup of VLS than change to a different multi-asset fund. Faffing about with a load of single sector funds or ITS is just a waste of time.

ok, i could also drip-feed in to L&GMI6 or 7 (to include more EM and property but less US) to run alongside the VLS80 until I reach say £5-10k, and leave the £427 in Woodford EI.

£427 isn't dipping your toe, it's smelling the water. I don't think it really matters what you do with £427 in the context of your total savings.

why do you say it doesn't matter about the £427?

Woodford EI returned 16.1% in year one. On £427, that's £68.74. That represents about 0.06% of your total cash assets based on your OP.
  • Has anyone tried splitting up their S+S ISA in to different pots, i.e. one for medium term and another for long-term...or 2 pots in to different "risk" bands? I've though of maybe having two spearate pots like this of say £5-10k each...

It is a particular strategy but tends not to be that popular.

On small amounts like you are suggesting, it would be difficult to see what benefit it could offer.

I just invest in one multi asset fund as a s and s isa-the Vanguard LS60 and at the moment have around £30-£35k in it. For the small amount you have I wouldn't worry about trying to restructure. If you are putting £200 - £250 a month away I would not worry about splitting it between the Woodford and VLS80 but just stick to the VLS as it is more diversified. As others have said your total investments are heavily weighted towards cash but if you intend buying a property in the next few years this makes sense. If not you may want to consider putting more into your S and S isa. Do you have a pension and are you making the best use of that for the long term?

My investment strategy is short term - medium term funds are in fixed term isas, index linked national savings certificates and current accounts and this makes up about 25% of my total investments as emergency funds, car and home improvements and back up to pensions as we are less than 5 years to retirement. The other 75% is in property and stocks and shares isas which I consider long term. As you are a lot younger than us (by about 22 years!) and don't own property your strategy may be different. This may be what you mean by different pots?

Yes, exactly. Being 33 now I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket either way. That's why I was exploring having 2 (or even 3) separate portfolios or 'pots' to manage over the years for different goals - has anyone here done this at a similar age to me?

Also, if I were to ditch the VLS80, any ideas for global mixed asset funds (that are light on UK equities) that could be paired with Woodford EI?

I like your woodford and VLS mix. Woodford certainly has added downside protection to my portfolio in recent months as well as enhancing performance Q1 2015.

I've taken it a step further. I have the VLS 100 as my core 30-35% then actives such as woodford, a small cap fund, Asia fund, Japan fund (hedged to £) and a Europe fund (hedged to £). 15-20% bonds/property too. I use monthly top-ups to slightly alter ratios as I see fit. With extra Japan and Europe QE likely come December, i'll be adding to my hedged funds.
