Took it back to be given a credit note, no refund allowed - disgraceful
Why disgraceful? Your daughter didn't buy it, so has no contract with them. There was nothing wrong with it so they have no obligation to accept a return, so getting a credit note was a good result and good will on their part.
John Clarke owns Machine Mart. Machine Mart was started in Altrincham in a garage when Exchange & Mart was the main outlet. John Clarke backed the owner who sold his shares back to Clarke once the company reached about 20 branches. Their Unit 2000 warehouse (Uttoxiter) is 50% new stock and 50% returns . No matter what they say, it's all the same company and you have your normal consumer rights .
They used to do minor repairs at the shops, but as the quality of Clarke Branded products suffered, returns to Nottingham and then Uttoxiter became normal.
If you argue longer and louder they must and will give up. It s NOT your job to send stuff back to Clarkes. They have a 40ft truck arriving each week , it can go back on that.
PS When I worked there we sold £20k a week, and only sold the product we thought were what the customer needed, not what they thought they wanted. 30 years on..... most stores stll don't sell that much stock.
On the subject of your compressor, Are you using it on an extension lead, if so, make sure its big enough and short as possible. Compressors can draw +30 amps on start up. Especially if the tank s full of air.
