Well of course you'll call the M3 mighty - you use to own one

You do own one don't you? Or did you sell it and buy a Lexus? I can't remember.

For someone who only joined the forum as a new poster a week ago, you seem to know a lot about me.

I will therefore take that as confirmation you are, in fact, Darkmatter101's latest timewasting alias, as suspected.

And, btw, it's 'used' to own one. Not very good at spelling for a top-flight 'management consultant', are you?

You seem pretty familiar with the backstory of users for someone who has only been on the forum for under 10 days...

Repair cost and the contribution by BMW is a reasonable deal. I suggest you get it repaired as there is no way of proving the repair job to the transfer box caused the current rapid break down.
  • OP, my friend has an independent repair garage and has recently had a 2010 X5 in with the exact same failure. The customer had recently bought the vehicle from an independent garage and once the extent of the damage was known, the vehicle was taken to a BMW main dealer where the whole cost of the repair was covered by BMW notwithstanding the fact that it wasn't bought from them.

BMW are aware of this problem. If you do a Google search you will find others have been in the same situation as you ie here...

There may not have been a full on recall, but there would have been a technical service bulletin where work would have done as and when vehicles came in for service.

If I were you, I'd hold out for a repair at not cost to yourself whatsoever.

Would that still apply after the transaxle has already been replaced once?

You'd like to think that any UJ/prop shaft wear or outstanding recall was spotted at the time, wouldn't you?

But - recall notwithstanding - the prop shaft is unlikely to have been replaced with the transfer box, and the transfer box doesn't appear to have been the cause this time - merely collateral damage.

Hence the free parts and 1/3rd off labour. Anyway its just my opinion and I would have accepted it myself.

To me, a non-mechanic, the fact the transfer box was changed only a year ago suggests that it was installed incorrectly or at the least is somehow involved in this large mechanical breakdown. Surely catastrophic breakdowns do not happen in cars as new as this (with a new transfer box) for no reason?
    .

Sadly speaking from personal expereince BMW have some serious issues with manufacturing and component design.

The auto-box in my 335i was known to 'leak' due to a poorly designed/manufactured part. I noticed it whilst changing wheels one day, a nice pool of transmission fluid on the drive way. The local independent was so use to doing this job he had all the stuff in stock and did the required work on the day. Had I noticed this, there was a decent chance the transmission could have seized a due to lack of oil.

In BMWs eyes if your car is more than 3 years old, than it's 'old', and any part can fail as part of wear/tear.

Essentially, I wouldn't touch another BMW without an BMC approved warranty.

Hope you get it sorted out.
