Mortgage Default on credit file

Hello, I am hoping someone out there can help me.
Back in 2006, I had a mortgage with my then partner. The relationship failed and I vacated the property in October 2008.
I advised my mortgage company that I was living at a new address and was no longer financially paying towards the property. I asked them to duplicate any corrospondance sent to my ex to me also at my new address. My ex partner was trying to "buy me out".
4 years on and many tried and failed attempts of buying me out, he decided to leave the property and rent out.
To cut a long story short he started defaulting on the mortgage on 2012. I wasn't made aware of this until 4 payments were late.
By this point my ex had decided he wanted the property repossessed and wouldn't agree to my offer of helping him pay off the debt.
My credit report is now affected. With equifax the defaulted mortgage shows on there and I am currently rated "fair". I am currently rated excellent on Experian, the defaulted mortgage doesn't show up on there, I have advised Experian of the defaulted mortgage, who it was with etc, they have investigated but can't find any reference to it.
I am now in a position where I have around £15,000 saved for a deposit but I fear lenders will run a mile when they see the defaults that I had no doing with.
My mortgage company won't take this off my file, is there anything a t all I can do?
Has anyone been in this situation and successfully got a mortgage. Any help would be welcomed warmly!

Once you knew the mortgage was in arrears what steps did you take?
Speak to the lender, attend court for the repossession hearing etc etc.
Have they contacted you since regarding the shortfall?0 -
I called my mortgage provider and queried why they were only just letting me know. They didn't give me an answer to this. I gave them up to date contact details for my ex (phone numbers/new address). I attended court and my ex partner advised them
He would be "taking the wrap" for it. The house was repossessed and sold for a higher value than what the property was worth meaning no debt was left over.
Even though my mortgage provider knew I wasn't residing in the property and hadn't done for over 4 years they still won't help me in removing this from my file.0 -
Its correct information, and its upto you to ensure payments were been madeDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Wouldn't I still have to declare this piece of information though?0

You were liable by virtue of your mortgage contract. Residing elsewhere is of no relevance. One cannot walk away from contractual arrangements due to changes in personal circumstances. It was a matter for you and your ex to have resolved a long time ago. May have been difficult to do so I appreciate that. But wasn't anybody elses problem. Unfortunately you have to live with the consequences.
Having said that. Time heals. Look forwards and matters will improve. The larger deposit you can save. The easier it will become. Also the credit history will fall away once 6 years has past.0 -
i know it isnt an excuse but I was very young (20) and in a very absuive/controlling relationship, my ex has never made it easy.
I am going to the citizens advice this evening and meeting my solictior tomorrow.
thanks for all the help.0
