Automatic transmission fluid level
Hello
When checking the auto trans fluid level in my 3.1TD Isuzu Bighorn I have noticed that when I check it when the engine is cold the dipstick hardly indicates anything in the Cold indicator of the dipstick. However, when I check it again after driving for a bit (least 10 minutes). The level seems fine in the Hot indicator part of the dipstick.
I know how to check the fluid level re moving the Trans leaver from L to P & back again & having the engine running etc.
So I am wondering which the most accurate indicator of the fluid level is when it is hot or cold.
Thanks

Your handbook will tell you, but generally, an auto is checked when hot, because the fluid expands considerably.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

There should be a hot and cold level on the dipstick.
Even when checking it cold you still need to work all the gears before checking
so its never totally cold. you need the engine running for at least a few minutes.
You should put the lever through all positions and leave it there for a few seconds in each gear and then repeat twice more.
Thats what i do on an auto and never had a problem.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
