    panic over, our LL has offered to install and electric fire, and we have offered to pay half the costs as it seemed the decent thing to do, but I would still be interested to hear if anyone can advise on insultation matters

    You can get the ventilation done for your house. These are not too expensive and will fit your wallet. Ventilation will help in providing safety and also held cooling. You can also learn more for the expert installers.

    an electric fire will cost a lot more than gas to run. Still, if you're happy.......

    Is for insults, I'm told I'm a "self-appointed moral guardian & should keep my mouth shut" so I guess I qualify!

    All I know is if my Parents tell me they want to downsize I'm going to tell them to keep the house to stand against social cleansing.
