Disconnecting gas at the meter, how?

I have been with Scottish Power for over a decade, but I cannot get help in disconnecting the gas and they have been giving me the run around.

To clarify I'd like it disconnected at the meter, not the road. Just capped off and safe.

I called British Gas and offered to switch my electricity to them if they would disconnect my gas. They put me through to an engineer who then hung up on me.

I don't mind paying a charge, I am trying to do a renovation and need the peace of mind that there is no gas if I mess up, there is a lot of very old pipes. I do not use gas anymore as I have pretty much switched fuel sources. Anybody done this?

Thanks.

The usual system to remove and cap a gas meter is straightforward. You phone your supplier, they get in touch with National Grid who sends out a contractor. Scottish Power can levy a charge to cover National Grid and their costs costs. If Scot Power are that bad, switch supplier to British Gas who at least will answer the phone in a few minutes or better still switch to Ebico for zero standing charges and leave the meter in and pull the control valve down to stop any gas flow after the meter.

If you really don't want or need the supply any longer, then I'm not sure why you don't get it disconnected as proposed by the supplier. Then there will be no standing charge to pay.

However, if you just want isolate the gas whilst you are working on the property, you can do this yourself quite easily & simply.

You can see a typical isolation valve yourself in the bottom LH corner of this picture, with the red handle.

The yellow sticker on the pipe indicates the valve is currently open allowing gas to flow as required. As the yellow sticker will also indicate, move the valve handle through 90 degrees and you will close the valve and isolate the gas.

    HTH.

If still in doubt, call in a gas safe registered engineer to assist you.

Why would anyone renovate a property and then remove a mains gas supply which is about a third of the cost of all-electric heating and hot water? Long term, it will greatly reduce the value.
