Advice needed to switch energy supplier

I have been with Npower for six years and had so many problems with them, too long to list here. But I'm desperate to switch. Latest scenario is that a debt I have been paying off with them, is now showing at below £500 on my pre payment meter. Happy days :T However, my bill is showing that I still owe over £1000  This is because "somebody"at Npower has made a "mistake" and reduced the debt on my meter twice. ( we were due some money off, which was agreed by the Ombudsman) I don't know how much they reduced by mistake or when this happened. My complaint finished in May but I only just received my latest bill. My question is: can they just claw the money back and is there a time scale, in which this should have been done by, to rectify their mistake. Will it affect my switch, although I can prove the debt on my meter is below £500 ? Please help
