Redundancy & new job

I am being made redundant on Friday. I only found out two weeks ago and it was a shock but I've now accepted it.

I was a bit panicked about being unemployed so applied for loads of jobs. Now I have one job offer (£2k less than my current salary) and an interview tomorrow (for potentially £2k more than my current salary).

I would prefer the job i'm interviewing for tomorrow, but the place that have offered me the job need a decision soon and I don't want to mess them around.

So, what would you do? Take any job and be grateful or hold out a bit for the right job?

  • I completely understand that you dont want to mess the company around - but have you received the contract of employment yet to sign? There is nothing wrong with accepting the position (I think) but until you review the contract you might not like the terms, i.e. holidays, sick pay, probationary period etc etc. Also they have the right to withdraw the offer at any time.
I have sat with a contract for a few days deciding before, and changed my mind and gone to another position.
At the end of the day, I have learned thru my experiences you have to do what is best for you.
  • Thank you for the reply.

No, no contract yet, so maybe I should just verbally accept?

I just don't want to be in a position of not having a job.
  • Yes I would verbally accept - and when you accept ask when they are going to send the contract out to you. Traditionally some companies are quite slow at doing this - and may send it in the post. Some may be super quick and email it over - but still this will give you some breathing space certainly into early next week.
Have you thought about what you are going to say at the other interview tomorrow - if they ask you if you have been for other interviews - are you going to tell them that you have one offer on the table? There is no right or wrong answer - but I would always been open an honest and tell them the truth - bascially you have been offered a position, but this is the job you want (unless you get put off at the interview of course!).
  • The other interview if via a recruitment agency, so I told them and they told me they would inform the company so they are aware of the situation.
